When do you need orthotic insoles?
Not everyone needs insoles, but when the foot doesn’t work as it should, the whole body feels it. Knee pain, lower back tension, plantar fasciitis, claw toes… very often the cause lies in the way you walk. A biomechanical gait study is the first step to find out for certain.
Custom-made vs. off-the-shelf insoles
Pharmacy insoles are fine for occasional or preventive use. But if you have a specific biomechanical problem, you need an insole made from a study of your own foot. At Podología Málaga Centro we use gait analysis technology to design insoles that correct your exact walking pattern.
Who can benefit?
Athletes with recurring overload, people with diabetes who need pressure relief, older adults with balance problems and workers who spend long hours on their feet. Also children with flat feet or knock-knees and bow legs while they are still growing.
If your feet hurt or tire when you walk, the first step is a biomechanical gait study in Málaga: it tells us whether you need insoles and which type.
How we make custom orthotic insoles at Semedi
At Semedi we never make insoles by eye. The process starts with a full biomechanical gait study: static and dynamic analysis plus a footprint reading on a pressure platform. With that data we design an insole specific to your foot, your activity and the shoes you usually wear.
Insoles are made from high-quality materials chosen for their use: rigid materials for biomechanical control in cases of severe overpronation, semi-rigid ones for everyday adult use, and soft offloading materials for sensitive or diabetic feet. Every insole goes through a fitting and adjustment stage.
Conditions we treat with orthotic insoles in Málaga
Custom insoles are an effective therapeutic tool for a wide range of conditions:
- Plantar fasciitis: heel offloading and pressure redistribution
- Adult flat feet: control of excessive pronation
- Metatarsalgia: offloading of the metatarsal heads
- Hallux valgus (bunions): relief of pressure on the first metatarsal
- Achilles tendinopathy: heel lift to reduce tendon strain
- Runner’s knee (IT band syndrome): control of knee valgus from the foot
- Biomechanical lower back pain: correction of postural chain asymmetries
- Diabetic foot: silicone insoles for full offloading
Sports insoles: competition and recreational use
In sports podiatry, athletes need insoles designed for the demands of their sport. A runner’s insole is not the same as a padel player’s or a cyclist’s. At Semedi we design sports insoles that combine biomechanical control with cushioning and lightness, adapted to the footwear of each activity.
A recreational runner needs an insole that controls pronation over thousands of repeated impacts. A padel player needs lateral stability. A footballer needs an ultra-thin insole that fits inside the boot. Those details make the difference between an insole that works and one that ends up in a drawer.
How long do orthotic insoles last?
It depends on the material and use. Everyday semi-rigid insoles usually last between 12 and 24 months with proper care. Sports insoles, which take more impact, may need replacing sooner. At our clinic in El Corte Inglés Málaga we offer annual check-ups to assess the insole and make any adjustments needed.
Frequently asked questions about orthotic insoles in Málaga
Are pharmacy insoles the same as a podiatrist’s?
No. Pharmacy insoles are designed for a generic profile and can ease mild discomfort or help prevent it. A podiatrist’s custom insoles are made after an individual biomechanical study, with selected materials and a geometry specific to your foot and your condition. They are personalised orthotic devices, not mass-produced products.
Do insoles correct the way I walk or just relieve pain?
Both, depending on the treatment goal. In children with functional flat feet, insoles can help the arch develop correctly if they are worn during the growth period. In adults, the main goal is to control biomechanics, spread loads optimally and prevent overload injuries, as well as relieving existing pain.
How long until I notice an improvement?
Most patients notice less pain within the first 2-4 weeks. Full adaptation can take 4-6 weeks, while the foot and musculoskeletal system get used to the new pressure distribution. Some initial discomfort is normal, especially with major biomechanical corrections.
Do I have to wear the insoles all the time?
It depends on the condition. With acute pain or severe mechanical problems, it is best to wear them in any shoe that allows it. As symptoms improve, some patients can do without them in low-impact situations. Your podiatrist will advise you on the right use for your case.
